Microsorum, also known as the ‘crocodile fern’, is a distinctive tropical fern with long, wavy leaves, dotted with veins and irregular bumps. This unique texture resembles crocodile skin, hence its nickname. Microsorum is a hardy plant that thrives in Dutch living rooms.

Light Microsorum prefers a semi-shaded to slightly bright spot with indirect light. It tolerates low light better than most ferns, but grows faster in a bright spot without direct sunlight. Direct sunlight burns the leaves and must be avoided at all costs.

Watering Keep the soil slightly moist, but ensure the pot drains well. Microsorum cannot tolerate dry soil, but it also does not like to stand in water for long periods. Water as soon as the top centimetre of soil feels dry to the touch. The plant thrives in high humidity; it is therefore recommended to mist its leaves or place it near a humidifier.

Temperature The ideal temperature is between 16 and 24 degrees. Microsorum is sensitive to cold draughts and temperatures below 12 degrees. Do not place it near an open window in winter.

Care Regularly remove leaves that have turned yellow or brown at the base. During the growing season, in spring and summer, give the plant a small dose of liquid fertiliser once a month. Microsorum grows naturally on tree trunks and rocks; a well-aerated, well-drained potting mix is therefore best.
