Dianthus, also known as ‘carnation’ or ‘thousand beauties’, is a charming ornamental plant with colourful, fragrant flowers in shades of red, pink, white and purple. Its flowers are often distinguished by their serrated edges and give off a deliciously sweet scent. Dianthus is equally suited as a houseplant or for the balcony or garden.

Light Dianthus thrives in the sunniest possible spots. A south-facing windowsill or an outdoor spot in full sun is ideal. The more light it receives, the more profusely it will flower. A lack of light results in stunted growth and less abundant flowering.

Watering Water Dianthus regularly as soon as the top layer of compost feels dry to the touch. Ensure the pot has good drainage and avoid wetting the leaves and flowers, as this encourages mould growth. In winter, the plant requires less water. Never allow the compost to dry out completely during the flowering period.

Temperature Dianthus thrives particularly well in cool temperatures, between 10 and 20 degrees. It is one of the few houseplants that benefits from cool nights, as this significantly extends the flowering period. Outdoors, it is often semi-hardy to hardy, depending on the variety.

Care Remove wilted flowers regularly to encourage the formation of new buds. This process, known as ‘deadheading’, significantly extends the flowering period. During the flowering period, feed the plant with a little liquid flower fertiliser every two weeks. After flowering, prune the plant lightly to encourage compact growth and a second flush of flowers.
