The Phalaenopsis, also known as the ‘moth orchid’, is one of the world’s most popular houseplants. With its elegant flowers in a variety of colours and shades, it is a real eye-catcher in any room. What makes it even more special is its exceptionally long flowering period, which can sometimes last from three to six months.

Light The Phalaenopsis thrives in indirect light. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as this will quickly scorch the leaves and flowers. A lack of light will slow down the plant’s flowering.

Watering Water the Phalaenopsis lightly about once a week, preferably by letting the pot soak briefly in water and then allowing it to drain thoroughly. Ensure the roots never remain in water for long, as this causes root rot. In winter, the potting mix can be slightly drier.

Temperature The ideal temperature is between 18 and 25 degrees. A slightly cooler night, around 16 degrees, stimulates the formation of new flower buds. Do not place the plant in a draught or near a radiator.

Care After flowering, cut the flower stem just above the second node. A new shoot with flower buds may grow from this node. Remove yellowed leaves at the base and feed the plant with orchid fertiliser twice a month during the growing season.
