Epiphyllum, also known as the ‘orchid cactus’, is a distinctive houseplant with flat, trailing stems and large, spectacular flowers. The flowers can grow to an impressive size and come in beautiful colours such as white, pink, red and yellow. Some varieties even flower at night and give off a delightful fragrance.
Light
Epiphyllum likes light, but not direct sunlight. A spot with bright, indirect light (for example, near an east- or west-facing window) is ideal. Excessive sunlight can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water regularly, but allow the top layer of compost to dry out slightly between waterings. Unlike desert cacti, this plant needs more moisture. In winter, you can reduce watering.
Temperature
The ideal temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees. For good flowering, the plant needs a cooler dormant period in winter (around 10 to 15 degrees). Avoid draughts and sudden changes in temperature.
Care
During the growing season (spring and summer), apply a little fertiliser every month. After flowering, you can prune the plant slightly to keep it compact. Epiphyllum prefers well-aerated, well-drained potting soil. Repotting is only necessary every two or three years.
