Pilea peperomioides, also known as the ‘crepe plant’ or ‘friendship plant’, is a cheerful houseplant with round, dark green leaves on long stems. It is known for its rapid growth and the numerous offshoots it produces. These offshoots can easily be separated and given to friends or family, hence its nickname ‘friendship plant’.

Light The Pilea thrives in a bright spot with indirect light. An east- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Rotate the plant a quarter turn regularly so that all sides receive the same amount of light and the plant continues to grow straight. Avoid direct sunlight, as this causes scorched patches on the leaves.

Watering Water the Pilea as soon as the top 2–3 centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch. Then allow the pot to drain thoroughly and ensure it never stands in water. In winter, the plant needs less water. Drooping or curled leaves indicate that the plant is thirsty.

Temperature The ideal temperature is between 13 and 25 degrees. The Pilea tolerates slightly cooler temperatures better than most houseplants, but does not like frost or cold draughts.

Care Regularly remove small offshoots at the base if you wish to keep the plant compact, or repot them separately. Wipe the round leaves with a damp cloth from time to time to remove dust. During the growing season in spring and summer, give the plant a small dose of liquid fertiliser once a month.
