SOINS

Info Begonia

The variegated begonia is a remarkable houseplant, grown exclusively for its decorative leaves. With patterns in shades of green, silver, red and burgundy, each leaf is a work of art in its own right. There are hundreds of varieties, each with a unique leaf pattern and texture.

Light The variegated begonia thrives in bright, indirect light. A spot near a north- or east-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as this will quickly scorch the delicate leaves. A lack of light causes the leaf colours to fade.

Watering Water the variegated begonia moderately as soon as the top 2 centimetres of soil feel dry to the touch. Water preferably at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves, as this can cause spots and mould. In winter, the plant needs less water. The leaf begonia likes high humidity, but do not spray the leaves directly. Instead, place the pot on a saucer filled with damp pebbles.

Temperature The ideal temperature is between 18 and 24 degrees. The leaf begonia is sensitive to cold draughts and temperatures below 15 degrees. Do not place it near an open window in winter.

Care Regularly remove yellowed or damaged leaves at the base. During the growing season, in spring and summer, give the plant a little liquid fertiliser once a month. The leaf begonia has a shallow root system, so a wide, shallow pot is better suited than a deep one.
