À PROPOS DE LA PLANTE
Info Ribes nigrum
Ribes nigrum, better known as ‘blackcurrant’, is a vigorous fruiting shrub that produces aromatic berries ranging in colour from dark purple to black. These berries have a strong, slightly tart flavour and are rich in vitamin C. They are ideal for making juice, jam, liqueur or syrup.
Light
Blackcurrants grow best in a sunny to semi-shaded spot. Full sun will give the best yield and flavour, but the plant will also thrive with slightly less light.
Watering
Water regularly, especially during dry spells and when the fruit is forming. The soil should remain slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. A layer of mulch helps prevent the soil from drying out.
Temperature
Ribes nigrum is fully hardy and well suited to the Belgian climate. The plant needs cold winters to grow well in spring and set fruit.
Care
Prune annually in winter or early spring. Blackcurrants bear fruit mainly on new growth, so remove old branches to encourage new shoots. Harvest the berries when they are deep black and ripe, usually in July. Apply a little organic fertiliser in spring to encourage vigorous growth and a bountiful harvest.
